LYRICS: Heart is in pieces It happened again I fell too early Whiskey is flowing, sittin’ here smoking Down at my window Wondering What am I lacking? What I feared most has happened What should I do? What’s the next move? Tired of waiting, can’t stop complaining I wanna start new Yeah But how would it be? If I slowly unwrapped your soul? Something has shifted I started again Glad I existed in my pain Just be an adult, live with your choices, know what your voice is They don’t know how it is to be you. You better try it I know it’s terrifying But do you really have a clue? What lies behind it, if you just tried it? I wanna start new Yeah How would it be? If I slowly unwrapped your soul? What would change, what would change, what would change? If I slowly unwrapped your soul Uh Does anybody feel What I feel On my own? Uhh Is anything real What I see Deep within Your soul.

LYRICS: I wanna show you all my imperfection Running through a war Breaking you to your divine expression feels like losing all Let me show you all my imperfection Running through my walls Breaking through to your divine expression is trusting when you fall A hopeless dreamer Ain’t gonna buy This reality Did I lose my mind? Did I lose my mind? Did I lose my mind? My mind, my mind, uhhhh ... Ain't gonna buy this reality. Did I lose my mind? World Broke into higher dimensions I didn’t know existed I see the world through different eyes than yesterday World Broke into higher dimensions I didn’t know existed I see the world through different eyes

LYRICS: You don’t trust the snake You understand its nature Anicca, Anicca, Anicca You don’t trust the snake You understand its nature Anicca, Anicca, Anicca You don’t love me You just love what I do for you How I make you feel comfortable, yeah There’s conditions on that love The type of love that you’re looking for Is the type of love that comes from a child or mother Boy I can’t feel that way with you I’ve got precautions in place A snake-bite-kit in space I’ve got my longsleeves and boots on Because I know your nature Because I know your nature Believe what they do, not what they say It’s not a matter of trust It’s a matter of understanding Understanding your nature You can’t be mad if a snake bites you You’re not supposed to trust the snake You’re only supposed to understand their nature It’s not so much of a loss I can deal with it I can gamble I throw a little bit on the table I’ve got some more to someone else I’m good I’m good Break me, break me, break me open Break me many times more, many times more, many times Don’t stop breaking me Break me, break me, break me open Break me many times more, many times more, many times You need to decide what is priority Hey life, hey life Break me many times more Break me until there’s no ego telling me stories Break me, break me, break me open Break me many times more, many times more, many times Don’t stop breaking me now Until there’s no ego telling me stories Until there’s no ego telling me stories Until there’s no ego telling me stories Until there’s no ego telling me stories

LYRICS: Don’t be scared to make friends with the dark When you love, there’s no way round , there’s no way round It will be rewarded in your art Fertilize your healthy ground, your healthy ground Nurtured by the tears of an open heart So thankful for the lessons found, the lessons found Attachment means suffering Still we cling to each other So addicted We’re addicted to love from each other. Don’t be scared to make friends with the dark When you love, there’s no way round, there’s no way round It will be rewarded in your art Fertilize your healthy ground, your healthy ground Nurtured by the tears of an open heart So thankful for the lessons found, the lessons found

An old man in a tractor watching me He wants me to feed his family They say be gentle to zucchinis Their skin has some sensitivity Their skin has some sensitivity Roughened by the hard work on the field Dependent on these big companies My feet disappeared in muddy grounds Pretending it’s chocolate helped me out Thick strong rain over me from the clouds Knowing that one day the sun comes out The sun comes out Yeah yeah yeah yeah Maybe we will make it through Resilience will need some fuel White men toxicating stolen land Exploitation by the government Can you see whose blood is on whose hands? We’re running towards an open end Towards an open end Towards an open end Maybe we will make it through Resilience will need some fuel

about

Olive Yaah gifts us with her new album “Luz del Abyss”, cross-linguistically referring to one of the many names of the Wild Woman Archetype (Spanish: luz del abismo, English: light of the abyss), which represents the knowing of the soul.

This album is dedicated to the transformative power of grief during cycles of life, death and rebirth.

Calling for a change, Olive Yaah relocated from Berlin to Naarm (Melbourne) in 2018 for the sake of surrendering to the Funk and Soul of the local music scene. In order to extend her visa and have time to make “Luz del Abyss” there, she absolved eight months of farm work in remote areas of so-called Australia. That time period turned out to be an important reset for her - she discovered and heavily practiced Vipassana meditation which helped her process personal hardships she experienced since leaving Berlin. Equipped with nothing but a Roland SP404 Sampler and a Casio Keyboard, she wove those cathartic experiences into new songs in the evenings while witnessing Australian agriculture's relationship with capitalism and climate change during the day. Back in Melbourne, she teamed up with local talent (Matthew Hayes, Myka Wallace, Erica Tucceri, Kumar Shome, Esther Henderson, Zoë Barry) to record those songs in a DIY studio. When COVID-19 hit, she managed to stay in the country and produced the album in isolation by herself despite an injury on both hands. Grammy nominated engineer and producer Nick Herrera (Hiatus Kaiyote, Jaala, 30/70) assisted her in the final production process and mixed the record.

Laid out as a lo-fi collage fusioning Jazz, Hip Hop, Soul, Vaporwave and Experimental, the 12-track-album is a stepping stone in Olive Yaah’s musical journey since her move to Melbourne. She embeds her magnetic and vulnerable voice in a keyplay that draws on Jazz and impressionist composers. Performing both solo and with a band, her polyrhythmic song arrangements invite heavy interplay with her rhythm section while sampler beats and pianistic and vocal landscapes provide a world of their own.
